INTIMATE and IMMERSIVE
The discovery of experimental performance satisfied the rebellious artist inside longing to burst out forth from the walls of traditional dance and theater. I found a home between the borders of artistic disciplines, traditional notions of gender representation, and alternative ways of viewing performance by creating a space of intimacy between performer and spectator in often in unexpected locations.
SALON APARTMENT SERIES
My year as a teaching fellow and PhD candidate in Performance Studies at the University of California, Davis in 2001 was a touchstone of my artistic development with three performance salons I held at my apartment. Fellow graduate students of all disciplines were encouraged to break boundaries using my apartment they would like. The results were nothing short of an art-making renaissance for all. ‘
My three site-specific performance installations use burlesque as its frame. Each is an intimate and explicit statement of female sexuality, exploring visceral spectator/performer relationships. It was also the birth of the “Putoh” co-created with artist Xavier Lopez Jr.
The Strip Salon
Preparation and Presentation: Welcome to the Red Light District of My Bathroom: The bathroom is transformed into peep show. Performed to a recorded comedy routine about the rituals of daily beauty, the stripper parodies this illusion of beauty, as she shaves and twirls her pasties for an intimate audience.
The Closet Salon
Sgt. Anna Conda and Combat Confessions: Using the eroticization of masculinity as a motif, the bedroom closet is transformed into the Altar of Ultimate Phallacy. Sergeant & Sage, Anna Conda, asks audience members to come inside confess their closeted secrets.
Chow Ciao Salon
La Guapa Gorging Geisha: Combining Butoh and Tango motifs, the piece explores stereotypes, servitude, and the iconic roles of the Geisha and “exotic” Latina, where the refrigerator becomes a site of Woman’s passion. Performed to mixed musical pastiche.
ROSEY SPADE AND THE MUSEUM OF FETISHIZED IDENTITIES
I dove deeply into the world of immersive theater through a deeply influential workshop/performance with Guillermo Gomez Peña and La Pocha Nostra where we held a 3 hour durational performance at the Ceredigion Museum, Aberstwyth, Wales. Chained and battered Victorian bride challenges participants to a game of strip poker. Set to a country-themed mixed musical pastiche.
MOVING BOUNDARIES MOVING BODIES: THE ART FORM OF PHYSICAL THEATRE
Academic rebellion is on display subverting traditional notions of viewing for academic audiences. Placing the text of my academic paper and poetry strewn across my body and performed to it’s recorded version, this in-your-face work took many a-conference goers way out of their comfort zone. If one is to theorize about experimental performance, one should not view if from the sidelines.
